Margaret River
In our search for a restaurant for dinner the previous day we had identified a good prospect for breakfast - a cafe called Egberts - and headed there shortly after 8:00. It modestly advertised itself as the 'Best Brekkie' (or something similar) and we weren't disappointed, eating our almond croissant and drinking strong coffee (not Egberts as we know it!) around a communal table outside. The weather was dry but cloudy; I imagine in bright summer sunshine this would be delightful.
We start our day's adventures by driving to the eponymously named Surfers Point where 20 to 30 surfers were enjoying the rather rough conditions. I couldn't help spotting the 'Beware Sharks' notice! From there we walked the relatively short distance to the mouth of the Margaret River and back before heading off along the track behind the beach to the White Elephant Cafe. Jo was, of course, wearing her clogs and drew one or two comments from other walkers about how on earth could she walk in sand in clogs! I have to agree! Just as we had ordered coffee at the White Elephant the rain started... Luckily the sunshades also work as umbrellas so we were able to drink in the dry. The walk back to the car was a little damp, though.
The wine recommended at Rockpool on the first night was Leeuwin Estate. We therefore felt obliged to visit the Leeuwin Estate winery. The restaurants at wineries tend to be open for lunch only and the Leeuwin Estate is no exception. This didn't bother us as we tend to have light lunches, and beside we already had dinner booked at an Italian in Margaret River. As it happened lunch wasn't being served that day at Leeuwin anyway. They were offering tastings though, so we weren't left with nothing to do! After tasting six of their wines Jo insisted that we bought a bottle ($45 Art Series Shiraz) with the intention that we should bring it home. More on that another day, suffice to say it didn't return with us!
The grounds at Leeuwin Estate are splendid and despite the continuing rain looked magnificent - not to mention, lush.
It was still raining as we walked from the Apartments to La Scarpetta Trattoria where we had a delicious dinner - and then back to the apartment, still raining. No wonder Leeuwin looks so lush.
